Something about Surrey

The name of Surrey comes from the Old English meaning 'southern district', used to describe the area south of the Thames settled by the Middle Saxons, who also gave their name to Middlesex.

The historic county of Surrey originally stretched into the heart of London.

Surrey remains one of the most populous counties in Britain. With many of those living in Surrey working in London, the population of the county has risen markedly in recent years, benefiting from the enhanced economic growth in the southeast.

Famous for

The Anglican diocese of Guildford was created in 1927 to serve the growing population of Surrey. Its cathedral was designed by Sir Edward Maufe, and the predominantly brick building on Stag Hill above Guildford was built between 1936 and 1961.

The first known horse race on Epsom Downs took place in 1661. Two classic flat races are held here - the Oaks was first run in 1779 and the Derby in 1780. Both races were initially encouraged by the Earl of Derby who had an estate at nearby Carshalton called 'The Oaks'.
